The names of some of those books actually do sound kinda familiar...

Is he a children's author... as in... picture books and others... Or just "chapter books" and the like?

No, he writes chapter books. Not as big Harry Potter, his biggest is about the size of Sorcerer's Stone/Philosopher's Stone.
