Ok, so the idea for this came from a post on Nanowrimo.com as posted by Meghan Williams...

I was wondering if anyone else has ever speculated on what your fan-base would be like if you got published and became EXTREMELY popular (ie J.K. Rowling)? Think of the current trends (shipping/slashing/RPGs/fanfic/etc.). How would the rabid fangirls treat your baby? How would you feel about it?

In my book, for example, i could see them making up slashes with my Female Main Character and the sorceress on one planet, perhaps something with her headmistress...

And i feel that all the worlds actually would open up lots of possibilities for RPGs and stuff...

I think it would be funny when reading really poorly written ones, but it would also be good to read the well done ones and see just how much these people appreciate your stories, that they would sit there and write about it, and that they have put in that effort to keep my world alive...

There is only so much that you can write within your own world that you can come up with, then you see all these other wonderful stories, and know that they have put their own ideas into that world, and that your characters, your stories, are now being given ideas from thoundands of minds, and that they are enjoying it so much...

I would love to go on a forum dedicated to my work, and start theories up, and see what the other fans say, and how much they tell me that i am so far off what the author would write about... or as someone pointed out in that thread on nano, it would be cool to write a really bad fan fic and see how the fans react... Razz

What about you guys? How do you think a fandom would treat your stuff?

I don't know... I'm published as of Wednesday- a column on HDM.org. I don't think I'll get fandom from it Laughing but I am so happy I'm on the proverbial ladder.

Fandom? I don't want fans. I write for me- it's what I like to do, and so that's why I do it. I may as well be paid for it, and if other people like it, so much the better- I love sharing my ideas about the world. I'd avoid going into bookshops just to check they've got my books in, but I'd definitely join a fansite, yes Very Happy

When everything's made to be broken
I just want you to know who I am

Oh yes, I would lurk at a fansite to be sure. As to whether I'll reveal my indentity, well maybe eventually... that would be an interesting post would it not? Laughing

But yeah, I woudln't care less about how people treat my work, so long as they don't start saying why I wrote the thing... I worte it because I wanted to. That is all, not some wierd thing they get from the text...

I agree with ArcT and My_Wolfbrother, I write because I like writing and because I love being able to start off from scratch and make up amazing characters, beautiful and scary scenes and dramatic plots.
I think being famous for writing would be so much fun, it would be getting paid for what you love to do. It would be liking having every day off and deciding to write . . that's heaven for me Very Happy

But I would get annoyed if people got the wrong idea about my books and thought that I wrote it for a certain reason or based it on someone that I never did. There is a trilogy out called 'The Noughts and Crosses Trilogy' By Malorie Blackman and it's about racism, it's based in england so she turns it around and portrays that the Blacks are superior and the whites and second class. Everybody thought that she was writing to get back at the white people for being racist and that she actually hated all white people! Which, of course, was totally wrong.

Sorry to ramble on but you get my point, I would hate my books to make someone think I had written it for the wrong reasons.

Yeah, I wrote this thing in fourth grade, it was about ghost pirates, it was nice...

AND EVERYONE THOUGHT I WAS DEPRESSED.

Looking at bad RPs, that would be fun. I would love to see how someone else would portray Kip or Troy...they'd probably totally screw 'em both up. Kip would be too arrogant and Troy would be too big-headed. And Mae, who's supposed to love birds (the real Mae hate's them xD) would probably want to be a bird, which isn't right...

Ooh, lurking at fansites, that sounds fun. By that time I might have my own internet access and not have to hang around at the library all day! But how would that look in the authors note at the back of the book? "Hawkins lives in Vermont. In a hippie van. On a lake. [sarcasm] we wish we were living on a lake too. [/sarcasm]." And they would all go, "OMG. Hawkins had to move into her truck?" then I would pop out of nowhere, and say "I LIKE living in my truck, thank you very much." and they'd go "OMG MY IDOL! EEEEE! CAN I HAVE YOUR VIRTUAL AUTOGRAPH!?" which would be...uh...*insert sarcastic comment here*.

Ah, yes, but then you would have all those smart and indignant readers as well, who would refuse to believe it was you... (so many people go on the net and say that they are J.K.Rowling...) and they would want you to prove it... but how could you? Bit of a dilemma... Confused

Ah, yes, the lack of a video camera would be troubling...I'd say you put something obvious in the authors note, like "my myspace account is blah blah blah..." or "my neopets account is this..." or "my gatheringofthefigments username is Hawkins..." something fancy, you know? xD

Ahhh, of course... but you would have millions of people trying to hack into your account... and you would never be able to get onto myspace, because there is a certain number of times that you can enter and incorrect password each day... Ah, but you would probably have your own official website, and you could drop hints on there... and no-one would pretend to be you if you announced the sites... because they would be too afraid that they would be talking to you and not know it... lol.
