I think this might be the best place for it, but feel free to move it moderators if you do so deem.
School newspapers rock. Well I lied. School newspapers suck, but newspaper written by the cream of the crop, the motivated, the uncensored by the school administration of high school students can actually turn out quite well. To tell the story of The Verbivore:
We used to have some horridable (new word!) boring, school-sanctioned newspaper that was completely forgettable. It was, to put it nicely, some of the worst writing I never did finish. Of course it went through the school administration. Of course the overachieving AP students of our school did not endorse this and so, as the old newspaper died, we rose to the challenge and decided to throw precedent out the window and do something new. We came up with The Verbivore. Instead of writing to those high school students who will only read about sports and cannot understand (and won't look up) words like phantasmagoric and inculcate (thank you Dictionary.com), we decided to write for the high-brow of high school society. Those who read 1984 in 8th grade for fun, or to be more general those who /read/. Secondly, we get away with a lot. In our first issue we had on the front page (in 12 pt. text) the word (please excuse me those of you who ride a high moral horse, but I do quote) "bitches". We also have regular submissions supporting drugs (some even going so far as to talk about coming home still high from pot). We have had some violent posts (*cough* me *cough*). We have had some just outright creepy posts about stalking on Facebook. Of course we sometimes use pen names. This paper is a joy for me to read. I look forward to each and every publication, and I greedly devour it.
So while some of you are out of school (or school like activities like colleges) I think that those of you still in school should give this a try. It's fun to write, it gets me back into the writing (deadlines can be wonderful you know). And you get to read some really interesting and entertaining pieces by your classmates. So try it, try getting together a newspaper by the writers for the readers, a newspaper by the readers for the writers. It really is worth it. _________________ Remember, a velociraptor can run at 10 m/s (indoors) and it knows no fear. |

It'll never work. There are too many dumb people in my school. And it'll never work. Not a good one, anyway. And hey! 1984 is next on my list after I finish Nanny Diaries... _________________ ~Michelle The Bee

No, we have too many dumb people, but it still works cause we cut the dumb people out of the system. (this is writing related so I'm allowed to post here) _________________ Remember, a velociraptor can run at 10 m/s (indoors) and it knows no fear. |
