This game sounds complicated and boring on paper, but really it's not. Also you can play it via chat! Although, it's not quite the same... but it's still fun. Also the best way to learn this game is to play it. And as long as your Narrator knows what he or she is doing you can play smoothly.
Depending on how many people you have the cards change. The cards are dealt out to determine who's who. The 'jobs' are Narrator/God, Angel, Mafia, Civilian, Detective, and Mafia Boss. The last two are optional and mainly used for larger groups. I'll get into how many cards are needed later. Once everybody has their cards, they /secretly/ look at them. The Narrator announces his or her self. The goal of the Mafia and Mafia Boss is to kill everyone else (except the Narrator who is essentially dead). The goal of everyone else to kill the Mafia and Mafia Boss.
The Turn Cycle:
1) The Mafia -
The Narrator tells everyone to go to sleep. Everyone (the Narrator is never considered in this everyone) closes their eyes. It is now night. The Narrator tells the Mafia to wake up. The Mafia and the Mafia only open their eyes, making no sound (unless they want to be found out). The Mafia Boss (who is considered Mafia) signals who he or she is. I make a triangle on my head. This only has to be done the first time, unless the Narrator asks otherwise. The Narrator next asks, who do you want to kill? The Mafia points to someone. Of course, if the Mafia isn't one person, there is usually some disagreement. If they don't come to consensus, and there is no majority. The Mafia Boss wins, and they kill the person that he or she is voting for. So basically the Mafia Boss is a tie breaker. Remembering who that person is, the Narrator tells the mafia to sleep.
2) The Angel -
The Narrator next tells the Angel to wake. The Angel opens his or her eyes. The Narrator asks who do you want to save. The Angel points to a person. That person can be the Angel his or her self That person is "saved". This means if the Mafia choose to kill that person, he will not be killed. The Narrator then tells the Angel to sleep.
3) The Detective-
The Narrator tells the Detective to wake. The Detective opens his or her eyes. The Narrator asks who do you want to know about. The Detective points. If the person is a Mafia, the Narrator nods, if not, the Narrator shakes his or her head. The Narrator then tells the Detective to sleep.
4) The Civilians -
Now that everybody is asleep, and all the jobs of the night are finished, it's time for some fun. The Narrator tells everybody to wake. Everybody opens their eyes. The next part is really the Narrators choice, but somehow the Narrator has to tell everyone who was killed. Normally by the form of a story. If the person was saved, usually something miraculous happens, to show that the angel intervened. These stories can be as outrageous as one wishes. After all the killing is out of the way, it's time for the daily Mafia hunt. Everyone is allowed into this process. People accuse people as being Mafia. Sometimes the accused defends his or her self and the accuser gives his or her reasons. After the accusations have died down. Everyone votes. Whoever gets the most votes, is hanged by the town for being a member of the Mafia. And yes the Mafia, Angel, and Detective all vote here.
5) Lather, rinse, repeat.
Usual Card Designation:
1) The Narrator or God - The most complicated. There are three possible ways of doing this. One, by vote. Well, duh. Two, by card. I use the Ace of Spades. Three, by killing. This means have people vote for Mafia, before everyone goes to sleep the first time. The first person to die here is the Narrator.
2) The Angel - The Ace of Hearts
3) The Detective - The Jack of Diamonds
4) The Mafia Boss - The King of Spades
5) The Mafia - Any black card that isn't used by another rank
6) The Civilians - Any red card that isn't used by another rank _________________ Remember, a velociraptor can run at 10 m/s (indoors) and it knows no fear. |

Haha, yes. I've played this before
In fact, if there is enough people interested, I would be eager to set up a game of this here.
