The radio call came not long after the first mech. The order to retreat. My men and I ran back. Back over the trenches we had just conquered, back into our muddy land. Another day wasted. _________________ Remember, a velociraptor can run at 10 m/s (indoors) and it knows no fear. |

The climb was long and tiring. Despite our haste and fear for Luke, we stopped to rest occasionally. But when the sounds of battle slowed and the mechs stopped shaking the ground, we climbed with doubled effort. The danger of being shot at was lessened and there were always things to scavenge amid the carnage. It took a strong stomach, but desperate times had hardened us all.
Finally we reached the surface. Jean and I crawled out of the tunnel and darted for cover. I swung my gun off my back and positioned it in my arms. Nimble fingers raced up and down it's length, checking, preparing. I was ready for anything now. I could hear Jean doing the same behind me. Even as my hands were at work, my other senses were focused as well.
I could hear the sounds of men fleeing, shots from whoever remained following them as they ran for the relative safely of the trenches. I didn't know who winning. I didn't even know who was fighting. It didn't matter to me anyway.
"Get to them while they're still recouping. Disorganized," said Jean. It was a good idea, but hard to put into operation. It was all they had. _________________ Altogether Too Unsophisticated To Deserve a Proper Postscript

"Sir, they want you on the radio." The call of one of my men interrupted my quick drink.
"Alright," I walked to the radio, careful not to let my head raise above the wall. The radio was handed to me. It was HQ. "Lieutenant Gerome Oswald reporting."
"Lieutenant, they want to see you."
"They?"
"The Generals."
I suppressed a look of surprise, "Roger."
"They want to see you now, Lieutenant."
"Roger. Over and out."
"Over and out."
I picked up my rifle. "They want me back at HQ. In my absence Keith is in charge. I'll be back as soon as I can." With that I threw myself over the trench and ran to the nearest rock. _________________ Remember, a velociraptor can run at 10 m/s (indoors) and it knows no fear. |
