Does anyone else think 300 is quite possibly the baddest ass movie ever? I mean really, can you ask for more action to be crammed into a 117 minute film? I think not! The fighting is really gritty and i love how the camera shots are always right there in the action. Not to mention it has some of the best visuals in any movie to date. The whole movie was shot on a green screen and yet it looks like they're on real sets most of the time. Another awesome aspect of the movie is that it is a based on a real battle. Although a lot of things are exaggerated in the movie, and of course the creatures in the movie were made up, it still has some historical truth to it. Can't wait to pick up the dvd on tuesday. Very Happy

Hello, I'm Grey Dawn the Latin student. Prepared to be ranted at.

Actually 300 (the movie) was based the graphic novel, 300, which was extremely loosely based on the Battle of Thermopylae. All that crap about Leonidas' wife arguing with the senate was complete crap. The mere idea of Sparta even having a senate is laughable. Let's not even get into the stuff about women's right. This is about Sparta for goodness sake. There was a giant Greek army that fought with the Persians. The whole 300 Spartans and 700 Thespians defending the pass came after the Greeks were betrayed. The Spartan defenders were defeated and the Greek navy then came in and fought off the Persians.
Wikipedia paraphrasing Ephraim Lytle, assistant professor of Hellenistic History at the University of Toronto wrote:
"300 selectively idealizes Spartan society in a "problematic and disturbing" fashion, as well as portraying the "hundred nations of the Persians" as monsters and non-Spartan Greeks as weak."

See I'm not the only one! If you look at the movie it's the free democratic Spartans versus the enslaved Persian. Spartan were possible the most controlled society of all. There was no freedom. Everything was for the fatherland, nothing for the person. Athens, possibly the most democratic part of Greece, was 37% slaves, and only 14% of the population were part of the democracy. Sparta had none of that. Only a king and the council of elders could say anything. Touraj Daryaee, associate professor of Ancient History at California State University, Fullerton, says "was a militaristic monarchy with a council of elders which decided political matters, but it was not a democracy." Persia actually paid their soldiers (both genders even).
Have I ranted enough to convince you that 300 was far from historically accurate? Or am I going to have to say more?

Now that I'm off the accuracy of the film, onto what I actually thought. I agree the action was pretty intense, but I personally like some plot and dialogue with my violence. So while I can see why you like it, it was not my brand of cheese. Although I must admit I love Sin City (which was written by Frank Miller who also wrote 300, for those of you who didn't catch the connection).

Don't you hate it when you like something and other people put it down?

Well GD, the names are still real!!

Don't worry Leon I liked the film! Grey Dawn, has a knack for putting a downer TO EVERYTHING!

But yeah, the visuals were great, and the special effects were awesome. The battle scenes were brutal and action-packed.

5 star! Very Happy BRAVO!

I'm a Latin student, and I did a translation on the 300, of course historical accuracy is going to bother me. Besides this forum needs a resident cynic. Very Happy

Well actually dawn, I never said the movie was historically accurate, I only said that it was based on an actual battle and that it had some historical truth to it, i.e. few against many. We spent about half a semester learning about Greece and several weeks on the battle of thermopylae back when i took world, so i know my fair share about the entire affair. Trust me, I understand that, like almost all of the Greek nations, Sparta was up to it's neck in slavery. I just didn't think it was worth mentioning, since after all I was looking for a discussion about the movie and not a history lesson. Confused Not trying to start anything here of course, just thought I'd state my point. I'd love to talk about ancient Greece with you sometime Dawn. You really know your stuff.

Sorry, but I have my pet peeves and history is one of them. Unfortunately the latest any of the history classes go to is the Renaissance. So for me it's hitting the library or doing Latin translations, half of which are myths. Anyway just to stay on topic somewhat. As I said 300 is a great movie if you want fairly mindless violence, but if you want great plots and lines look elsewhere.
I give 300
(on a bad day) a 5 out of 5.
(on a good day) a 3 out of 5.

I'll agree with you there, the plot and dialogue is nothing shor then terrible. But something about really muscular men in armor, screaming all of the time and chopping people up, just seems like such an appealing idea for a movie. Twisted Evil But it's sort of a one time thing. It was nice to see a movie for once that was entirely involved with the action on the battlefield, even if everything else suffered. But i don't think there's a need to start making alot more of them. 300 left me satisfied, no need to make an entire genre around it.

What about that movie they're making now, it's called like the Last Legion or something, it's centered around Caesar and Excalibur. Apparently, they were in the same story.

Uh...

I wanted to see it, not get it, just to see it once. I'm all for mindless violence though. Remember my action movie? (Not the actual Action Movie!, the one I made up where I'm the bad guy and fall off a building. xD I don't know why, I'm not emo or nothing, but that's just so funny!)

I just saw the preview for Last Legion, and *drinks a shot of water* it's grossly inaccurate. I already hate the main characters, do you know how much of an asshole Roman emperors were by the end of Rome? Not to mention the fact that there is no real last emperor of Rome, Rome was spilt into two parts and the Eastern Roman Empire just kinda fused into the Byzantine empire. There is no definite end.

[/history rant]

Oh right, action movie. I shouldn't worry about the plot.

Are you action-movie bashing, Grey Dawn?

Shocked

A GAYBIE ASKED ME THAT ONCE.

She was like, "are you gei bashing, elite?" and I was like, "hell yeah, why not?" and then they told me I'm going to hell because God wants us to read gay pornos.

Or something along those lines.

Yea, I action-movie bash all the time, but only those placed back in the Classical Era, basically anything about Greece and Rome.

OMG YOU CHEATER!

I was going to do something ninja-y, but I'm an action hero, not Jackie Chan. There's a difference between action and kung-fu.

*takes out .44 magnum and starts shooting at everything; one bullet bounces off a trash can and hits Hawkins in the tummy*

I JUST PUT A BAND-AID THERE FROM WHERE GREY DAWN POKED A HOLE IN MY TUMMY!

*puts a second band-aid over it*

*doesn't notice the two men have wandered off in confusion*
